Genre film evaluation

For my short film, i decided to venture out of my comfort zone and try and  make a romance, usually i would lean towards a drama or a thriller.

But this time i wanted to push myself to see i i could actually write a romance. The idea came from having written a couple of short stories about romance but never having enough basis of story to complete the book.

So I decided to take elements from the stories that i have written and thats how the first draft of my short film came about.

The original title of the film was going to be called ‘Forbidden Love’ In which the story was about two guys, but after a struggle to find actors, I had to change it to a guy and a girl.

After I re-wrote the script to accommodate the story, another thing to change was the title, I decided to call it ‘All I Ask’ taken from the song of the same name by Adele. I felt that the lyrics of the song really worked with the story and the characters.

Once I had my actors, I had to start looking for places to film. A major location that i needed was a bedroom as the majority of the film took place in a bedroom.

The actors that I needed were Shola, Kira and Tom. Once I had them all together, I needed to do a read through, mainly to see how the actors read together and to see if they had chemistry. Luckily they did.

The first thing that I began filming was the first scene between Shola and Tom. The vision in my head was to have a big bedroom, this wasn’t bought to life as the room I filmed in was a small one.

This was something that proved tricky to film as the image set to look completely different. After I had done this, another thing  did for my locations was to film in RedHill.

I filmed at the COSTA in Redhill and the Redhill park. Theses were fun places to film but maybe next time I will have to invest in lighting.

SHORT FILM PREMISE

Premise:

The story takes place in a present day London. It’s a love story. The story is of three people, Scott, who is the main character, Alexandra who is Scotts girlfriend and finally Chloe who is Scotts best friend.

The story takes place over the course of two days and will be filmed in and around London, with some scenes being filmed on location at Hyde Park. Other locations will include the exterior of a restaurant, someone’s bedroom and a registry office.

The equipment that I will need will obviously be a camera. I’m going to look into buying a stedicam, so that I can make sure the camera shots aren’t shaky.

The story will escalate as Scott and Alexandra decide to get married, Chloe, who is totally in love with Scott is mad and crazy about the idea.

The other equipment that I will need is a second camera and a boom mike.

The following is my script for my FMP.

INT./EXT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT.

We See ALEXANDRA PIERCE walking out of a restaurant.

ALEXANDRA [V.O.]

So tonight was meant to be our first date. But you didn’t show.

We see her walking down the street. Its starts to rain.

Alexandra continues to talk to us in Voice Over.

MUSIC BEGINS

We get a small music cue, its a piano and just a piano.

There’s a sense of romance about it, but with a hint of

upset. The music plays during the following.

ALEXANDRA [V.O.] (cont’d)

Now I don’t know why you never showed up. Maybe it’s because you got shy or you were nervous about meeting me or me meeting you.

CUT TO:

INT. ALEXANDRA’S BEDROOM – LATER

She’s on her bed on her phone, we find that she’s actually

typing the Voice Over into a message.

ALEXANDRA (V.O.)

But for whatever reason you didn’t show, I hope it’s a good one. I also hope that we can try again one night. Alex x.

She watches and waits for a reply.

TITLE FROM BLACK:

ALL I ASK

MUSIC ENDS

INT. SCOTT’S BEDROOM – NIGHT.

This is Scott Anderson, [18] smart, funny and the guy who

was meant to meet Alexandra. He’s sitting on his bed with

his friend. Chloe Jackson, [19].

CHLOE

So what are you going to tell her?

SCOTT

I have no idea.

CHLOE

How about the truth?

SCOTT

What that I was too embarrassed to meet her?

CHLOE

From her message, I’m sure she’ll understand.

SCOTT

‘I hope it’s a good reason.’ That’s what she said. This is not a good reason.

CHLOE

Sure it is. You got cold feet. It happens.

SCOTT

Well it shouldn’t have.

CHLOE

Listen, you’ve spent the past 6 months talking to Alex online, you’ve spoke on the phone and you’ve skyped. How is this any different?

SCOTT

You won’t understand Chloe.

CHLOE

Try me.

She looks at him.

SCOTT

It’s cause it’s actually her.

CHLOE

What’s that supposed to mean?

SCOTT

See, I knew you wouldn’t understand.

CHLOE

Cause you can run away?

SCOTT

Yes. I could always end the conversation if I got shy or something, but I can’t do that in person. It’s like I’m trapped.

CHLOE

Do you love her?

Scott sighs. He looks at Chloe who smiles.

CHLOE (cont’d)

Oh my god, you do! Have you told her?

SCOTT

No I haven’t.

CHLOE

Well why not?

SCOTT

Cause it’s not something that can be said over the computer screen.

CHLOE

Gosh you’re a fool Scott Anderson. A fool. So here’s what you’re going to do, you’re going to call her back, not text. Call, okay?

SCOTT

Okay.

CHLOE

Good, then when she answers you tell her the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, you hear me?

SCOTT

It’s a phone call, not a jury service.

CHLOE

No time for jokes. After you tell her the truth, you see if you can meet up again, this time in a less romantic setting with lots of people around.

SCOTT

I highly doubt she’s going to kill me.

CHLOE

What did I just say? Now arrange for it to be during the daytime, mainly so that I can come along. But also so that it’s relaxed and calm. Maybe go to the park or go to the pub…Wait, scratch that, don’t go to the pub. You wanna go somewhere formal like cafe or a Costa. Go for coffee and get to know the girl you’re in love with.

Scott looks her.

CHLOE (cont’d)

What?

SCOTT

I’m not making the phone call with you in the room.

CHLOE

Why not?

She smiles at him and then walks out the room, she closes the door behind her as we…

SLOWLY PUSH IN TO SCOTT PICKING UP THE PHONE AND DIALING A NUMBER.

INT. ALEXANDRA’S BEDROOM – CONTINUED

Alex is still on her bed. Her phone is on the side. It starts to ring. Alexandra picks it up and looks at the caller I.D. Scott.

She keeps looking at it ring. She can’t hang up. She takes a deep breath in and answers.

ALEXANDRA

So where were you tonight?

INTERCUT. ALEXANDRA’S BEDROOM / SCOTT’S BEDROOM –

CONTINUOUS.

SCOTT

Honestly, I freaked.

ALEXANDRA

I thought as much.

SCOTT

I’m sorry if I made you look a fool.

ALEXANDRA

It’s fine although I think the waitress felt sorry for me.

Scott laughs.

SCOTT

See, it’s not all bad.

Alexandra smiles.

ALEXANDRA

So what’s the reasoning for this phone call?

SCOTT

I was wondering if we could reschedule?

ALEXANDRA

I think we could do that.

SCOTT

Yeah?

ALEXANDRA

Yeah. When and where, that is the question.

SCOTT

Well I was thinking we go to the park.

There’s a pause.

ALEXANDRA

The park?

SCOTT

Or unless you have any other ideas?

ALEXANDRA

The park sounds good to me. When shall we meet?

SCOTT

When are you free?

ALEXANDRA

I’m free whenever.

SCOTT

How about tomorrow?

ALEXANDRA

Tomorrow’s good with me. What park?

SCOTT

Hyde. Say around 11?

ALEXANDRA

I assume in the AM?

SCOTT

You assume correct.

They smile. Even though they can’t see each other, they can

feel each other.

ALEXANDRA

I’ll see you then.

SCOTT

Yes you will.

ALEXANDRA

Goodbye my love.

SCOTT

I love you.

FADE TO:

EXT. HYDE PARK – THE NEXT DAY.

It’s a sunny day. The sun is shining and birds are singing. The park is surrounded by people. We focus on Chloe and Scott, walking into the park.

MUSIC BEGINS

A fun an up beat tempo. Love is in the air.

CHLOE

So you said you’d meet her at the entrance.

SCOTT

Yep, at 11.

CHLOE

You did say morning, right?

SCOTT

Of course I did.

Scott looks at his phone, the time reads 11:10 am. He looks around, he can’t Alexandra anywhere.

CHLOE

Maybe she’s decided to play you at your own game?

SCOTT

Oh thanks Clo.

CHLOE

You are most welcome.

Then Scott see’s something. He taps Chloe on the shoulder.

SCOTT

It’s her. I see her.

Chloe looks around. She can’t see.

CHLOE

Where?

SCOTT

Your 2 o’clock.

She looks in that direction, she see’s Alexandra. All

dressed in a suite and bow tie. She smiles.

CHLOE

God I love it when I’m right.

SCOTT

Okay, you need to leave now.

CHLOE

What?

SCOTT

Leave.

CHLOE

Why? I actually want to meet her as well.

SCOTT

Well maybe another time.

Alexandra walks up to them.

CHLOE

Too late.

It’s a little bit awkward.

ALEXANDRA

Hello.

SCOTT

Hi.

Scott’s just memorized by her. Chloe looks at Alexandra.

CHLOE

Hi, I’m Chloe. I’ve heard all about you.

She looks at Scott.

ALEXANDRA

I dread to think what Scott has been telling you.

CHLOE

Oh, it’s all good things. No need to worry.

Scott looks at Chloe. He indicates for her to leave.

CHLOE (cont’d)

Oh gosh. Of course. I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone.

She starts to walk away but turns back.

CHLOE (cont’d)

Don’t forget I’m speed dial number 2.

She winks at him and continues to walk off. It’s just

Alexandra and Scott. It’s awkward again.

ALEXANDRA

Why she on speed dial?

SCOTT

Oh, she thinks you’re going to kidnap me.

They share a look and laugh.

ALEXANDRA

Well I can tell you now, the likelihood of that happening are like twenty-five percent.

He smiles.

SCOTT

Now I feel offended. I was hoping for at least fifty, maybe seventy-five.

They start to walk through the park.

SCOTT (cont’d)

So, I’m sorry about last night.

ALEXANDRA

It’s fine Scott. I get it, you freaked out. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was going to go.

SCOTT

Really?

ALEXANDRA

Yeah. I know we’ve been talking for ages but it was actually meeting you that scared the life out of me.

SCOTT

It was the same with me.

ALEXANDRA

For real?

SCOTT

Yeah. I guess I hadn’t imagined actually meeting you. I mean I knew it would happen but it was just a shock.

ALEXANDRA

So what are we going to do today?

SCOTT

Whatever you want. It’s your day.

ALEXANDRA

How about we just book into a hotel and order room service?

There’s a suggestive smile from Alexandra.

SCOTT

And what would we be doing in this hotel room?

Alexandra leans in and whispers into Scott’s ear and then

leans back.

ALEXANDRA

So, what do you think?

SCOTT

I think you have yourself a date.

She smiles at him as we…

CUT TO:

INT. HOTEL ROOM – LATER.

MUSIC – Things are heating up. Its steamy and romantic, its

the kind of music you could loose your virginity to.

Alexandra is wrapped around Scott’s arms. They lie in bed

together. Scott is stroking Alexandra’s hair.

ALEXANDRA

Well that was good.

SCOTT

Wanna go again?

They laugh.

ALEXANDRA

Let’s get married.

Scott’s in shock. He doesn’t know what to say.

SCOTT

Ummm…

ALEXANDRA

Realizing how stupid

she’s just been.)

Gosh, that was stupid. How about we just forget that I said anything. Hey, let’s just forget i even started talking.

SCOTT

Yes.

Alexandra looks at him.

ALEXANDRA

Wait, is that yes to forgetting I started speaking or yes, let’s get married?

SCOTT

Yes.

ALEXANDRA

Okay, you’re going to need to be more communicative.

SCOTT

Yes.

ALEXANDRA

Seriously!

SCOTT

I’ll marry you.

Alexandra is taken aback.

ALEXANDRA

Wait, for real?

SCOTT

Yes.

SCOTT

I love you Alexandra Pierce and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Alexandra kisses him on the lips.

ALEXANDRA

So when shall we do it?

They look at each other. As we…

MUSIC ENDS

CUT TO:

INT. SCOTT’S BEDROOM – DAY.

Scott is backing a bag, Chloe is walking up and down the

room. She’s mad.

CHLOE

Are you mad?

Scott goes to respond.

CHLOE (cont’d)

Don’t answer that, you must be. I mean who would wanna marry someone they don’t even know? Again, don’t answer that. Why are you doing this?

Again, he goes to respond.

CHLOE (cont’d)

Just shut up, I’m not finished. I mean, seriously? After one date you know she’s the girl you wanna spend the rest of your life with? You’re fucking crazy! If I thought I’d marry the first guy I ever went on a date with, I’d be Mrs Harry Styles by now. And I will tell you something, I couldn’t trust that man as far as I could throw him. Which turned out to be a far distance after I caught him bed with Caroline Flack. That filthy bitch.

Scott looks at her.

SCOTT

Sorry, but when did this become about  You? Look, I love her Chloe, I always have…

CHLOE

You’ve only known the woman five minutes.

SCOTT

And that’s all it takes. One second, one glance, one heart beat, one ride of a carousel that never stops turning. That’s all it taken for me to fall in love. She is my carousel and I can’t get off.

He looks at her. He’s desperate.

SCOTT (cont’d)

Maybe when you fall in, we can have this conversation. Until then get the hell out of my room.

We get another piece of MUSIC,

A piano again, but this time it’s really sad. Think the

‘Doomsday’ theme from Doctor Who. The Doctor and Rose on

Bad Wolf Bay.

They look at each other. Dead locked eyes.

CHLOE

When she breaks your heart, don’t come running back to me. Just know that that’s something I could never do to you.

She walks out as the music intensifies.

We get shots of them as young kids. Playing and always being

together. The odd shot of a carousel, spinning.

Chloe looks back at him, one last time.

CHLOE (V.O.)

You’d think I’d be able to tell you. Tell you how much you mean to me. Tell you that I love you. That I have always loved you.

She walks out.

INT. RESTAURANT – DAY.

We see Chloe in a cafe; she’s drinking coffee as she sits

there and thinks about the mistake her best friend, the love

of her life is going to be making.

The music continues as we just focus on Chloe

CHLOE (V.O.)

I kinda thought you knew. They always say that a woman knows when a guy likes her. They say, they can just tell.

INT. REGISTRY OFFICE – NIGHT.

The theme continues as Scott and Alexandra get ready to get

married. She’s in a dress and he’s in a suit.

CHLOE (V.O.)

But part of me always thought you’d be able to tell. And then you’d pull me into your arms and tell me you love me too.

They walk into the office. As we…

INT. RESTAURANT – DAY

We are still with Chloe as we

CLOSE UP on her face. A single tear rolls down her cheek.

CHLOE (V.O.)

Cause that’s All I Ask.

FADE TO BLACK.

THE END…

Long time no update.

So today is the 24th September 2015 and we are just about to break for lunch. This mornings lessons have been filled with fun, drama and the odd 30 second dance party.

The first lesson of the day was a strange lesson. I’m not really sure why it was strange but there was something that just felt different. In the lesson, we had to look at the proper ways of doing a reference. So whenever you quote something from a website or a book, you have to fill out this online app about who wrote the article and when it was created. All that stuff.
